What is Digital Marketing?
Hello! Welcome on my new blog about Digital Marketing. If you are here I’m sure you want to know what Digital Marketing is, why you should use it and which benefits you can get for your business. You really need to understand what Digital Marketing is, because it’s not so clear for you. Many people and companies are talking about it because it’s cool, but they really don’t know what Digital Marketing is. So often you get confused, right? Keep calm and read my blog: everything will become clear. OK?
Before we start seeing what Digital Marketing is, you have to know that I’m a real Italian, and my english is very special! If you find something strange while reading my blog, it’s because I literally translate some italian expressions. But think about this: if you follow me… you will also learn italian! What more? 🙂
First of all: Digital Marketing is like pizza!
What?! Are you joking?! Yes, I’m joking, but I always use pizza to explain things in my classrooms, so if you will participate to some of my training about Digital Marketing, you will see pizza over and over and over again.
Because I’m Italian I’m going to tell you the secret of my family: how to make the best pizza in the world! My grandfather told my father and he told me: “Please, don’t give the secret to anyone”. So, I’m going to be the first one breaking the family tradition and you’re going to be the first non-Italians to know the secret. There are some secret ingredients nobody knows. Flour, salt, yeast, tomato, mozzarella, olive oil and water. Unbelievable right? Why are you laughing? This is my family secret. I’m joking again.
Pizza and Google: many similarities
I choose pizza because I find a lot of similarities between pizza and Google. What? That’s crazy. Pizza is made with simple ingredients (apparently). I’m sure that even in Africa, Vietnam, you will find those ingredients in ever grocery store. It’s very cheap to produce, some of the ingredients are free (ex. water, salt) and it’s impossible to make it 100% perfect. No matter how many times you go to the same pizzeria, you order 10 pizzas and every pizza looks a little different.
Google is a set of very different tools apparently. One of the tools you use it on a daily basis, Google Search. When we go to Google there is a lot more and we’re going to see a lot others. It’s very cheap to use. Most of Google tools are free, so even cheaper than pizza. It’s impossible to make it perfect.
So, pizza and Google are very similar for these reasons:
- very simple ingredients
- very cheap to produce (almost free)
- impossible to make it 100% perfect!
- always changing
For example, about search engine optimization and analytics, every few months something is changing. The same thing working before, now doesn’t work anymore. Even if you do the same things, something has changed: exactly like pizza. This is why I tell you that digital marketing is a little bit more than just learning a skill. Digital marketing is a big subject, nowadays. Once you find out what makes you passionate, you have to go into it for a long time, because it’s something that’s going to continuously change.
It doesn’t exist (1) that you learn everything and then in 10 years it’s still going to be as it is. No way! Because of that it makes sense to dig in.
So, what is Digital Marketing?
Let’s see what Digital Marketing is. Are you ready? Here you will find three definition: the first comes from Google, the second from an important Institute but… the best is the last one!
1. “Digital marketing is the process of building and maintaining customer relationships through online activities to facilitate the exchange of ideas, products, and services that satisfy the goals of both parties.” (Google)
How do I know that? I don’t now. I secretly Googled it and this is what came out. But as you are here on my blog, let’s see a better definition.
2. “Digital marketing is the use of digital channels to promote or market products and services to consumers and business.” (Digital Marketing Institute)
We’ll say that. It was said by the Digital Marketing Institute, but I’m going to give you a better definition which is this:
3. “Digital marketing is getting customers using only the computer and Internet.” (Christian Farioli)
Now you understand why is the best one, right?
My definition is exactly like pizza: simple, free and always changing. In the future it will be different, but today this is the meaning of digital marketing. In the next posts I will go deeper and you will learn many very interesting things that will change your business and help you getting new customers.
What do you think about this? How do you define Digital Marketing? What is your experience with Digital Marketing? Let me your feedback and I’ll reply to your comments.
Have a good day… and prepare the best pizza in the world! You can use my secrets! 😉
(1) “Non esiste!” is a typical italian slang expression you can’t live without, that means “it doesn’t make sense”
